Chapter 1 – Silent Centaur

It was the second night of traveling through the thick jungle of Desolace. Hamuul often would toy around with the ring that Rev gave him; holding it up to moonlight, tossing it up in the air and catching it, and slipping it back on his finger. When he held it tight he could almost feel something inside the small object stirring. It shone brightly when it contacted moonlight.

“What other trinkets did you steal?” Hamuul said curiously as they started to see the sun rising. They had been traveling together for two nights but didn’t talk very much to each other.

“Oh, all kinds of stuff,” Rev said proudly.

“Where did you get this ring again?”

“A very long time ago, the day they banished me…the day they gave me this,” as Rev took off his right glove and showed Hamuul his wrist. It was branded with a strangle mark. “It means I’m a traitor and an enemy of all elves. My instructor, a good friend of mine before I decided to take a different path, owned that ring.”

Rev was quiet for a moment.

“He was one of the elves that escorted me into the darkest corner of the forest, where the most dangerous of creatures lurk. As he turned his back to me, I grabbed one of the guard’s swords and swung blindly, and I cut off his finger. And as the guards ran to stop me from doing more damage, and my instructor was howling in pain, I picked up the ring and ran until my legs wouldn’t run anymore.”

Rev continued, “It’s more than a valuable. I know it holds power, and it belongs to a druid. And until now, I haven’t met a druid that is on my side.”

Hamuul nodded in approval.

They walked into a small area cleared of trees. Rev and Hamuul were ready to stop traveling for the night because the sun was making their surroundings brighter and brighter by the minute. They heard a faint cracking of a twig, and they both looked down to the opposite person’s feet. Neither had stepped on a twig.

They looked at each other, and then around the small clearing. They heard another snap and a few more faint sounds coming from the trees around them.

And then suddenly, an arrow whizzed through the air and barely missed Rev’s neck. They both grabbed their weapons and ran into the safety of the trees, on the opposite side of the clearing.

And then they saw them; a dozen Centaur sprinting across the clearing, with heavy metal weapons and bows attached to their sides. Their hooves made a soft tapping sound as they hit the dirt.

Rev quickly drew his small bow from his waist and slipped out a few arrows from a large pocket. He aimed and hit a Centaur, and he fell. And then he shot another and again a Centaur fell.

Hamuul grabbed his staff and quickly felt energy coming into him, and then he released it in a concentrated beam of light. Three more Centaur lay dead in a cloud of smoke. The seven horse-men charged into the trees and Rev unsheathed his two swords and in a quick cat-like reflex, stabbed two of them, one with each sword, as they entered the bundle of trees.
Hamuul swung his staff and hit one of them on the side of the head, a stream of blood coming from his skull as he hit the ground. Two of them ran towards Hamuul at one time, and he jumped out of the way, but as he made his leap one of them clipped his back with a crudely-cut sword. Hamuul tumbled onto the ground, and got up as a large bear. Filled with rage, he jumped onto one of the Centaur and dug both claws into him, biting the enemy’s neck as he collapsed.

He turned and growled at the other Centaur but he received a hard blow to his side. The massive body of the bear stumbled and tripped on a low tree trunk. The Centaur grabbed his weapon, and pointed the sharp side towards Hamuul. Hamuul’s four paws violently tried to claw the Centaur, but missed. Just as the Centaur was about to drive the sword into Hamuul’s stomach, a short and curved sword flew through the air and stabbed the creature, and he fell.

Hamuul shifted into his normal state and saw Rev, only holding one sword, and a few Centaur corpses around him. Rev approached the Centaur closest to Hamuul and grabbed his sword out of him.

They both ran from the scene.

“Are you okay?” Rev said as they quickened their sprint.

“My side is bruised, but I’m fine,” Hamuul said as he started to fall behind. He morphed into a cheetah and caught up with Rev.

“We need to get away and find a safe place,” Rev said quickly as the sun rose higher, exposing more of the jungle to bright light.

Hamuul ran on all four of his golden cheetah paws and saw a bright white creature in the corner of his eye, but when he turned his head, he noticed there was nothing there.

“This way!” Hamuul growled and they ran in that direction. Adrenaline began to wear off and they became very fatigued, just as they reached a small cave. They entered the empty dark cave and put down their equipment. There was a small stream running through the inside of it and they filled up their water pouches, and put their backs on the cold walls of the cave.

They peered out and didn’t see any movement, and their hearts began to slow back to a normal pace.

Rev breathed heavily and spoke quietly, “They are almost silent, and they know this jungle like the back of their hands. We got a little too reckless out there…speaking loudly and walking through clearings of trees.”

“I know,” Hamuul said quietly, “I’ve seen them attack my homeland all my life.”

Love the story, but I find it somewhat odd that the centaur, who had complete initiative on Hamuul and Rev, would form such an unorganized attack. Even if the attack were unorganized, the first arrow missing is somewhat unlikely. The only excuse I see for this would be if the centaurs themselves were surprised to see the two companions and thus fired without thinking.

They knew they had been heard and they their prey was going to make a break for it, so they let loose without all the aim they wanted.

Keep in mind that if I did not approve, you would be forced to finish the chapter at gunpoint.
