A few people (by which I mean my mother) have (by which I mean has) requested that I flag particularly brutal chapters. This is a particularly brutal chapter.
It would be a fascinating sociological study, to find out why this world fell to pieces quite so quickly after the Law abandoned it. I've got good reasons laid out in my mind - the Law knew what it was doing, after all - but I'm having a tough time getting the feel of it into the story. Any reasoning that might surface must be overwhelmed by the unhappiness of it - it's always been my feeling that to all but the most scholarly survivors of a falling civilization, their new predicaments come as nothing but brutal, senseless shocks.
On a lighter note: rumors of the demise of the attack gnome have been greatly exaggerated!
Here are the next nearly five pages of the rewrite, nearly all of it brand new story: the second half of The Marauders’ Wake.
